What is it?
A digital nomad visa is a visa that allows remote workers to live and work in a foreign country. Digital nomad status is granted to remote workers or service providers. They must prove that they provide remunerated services remotely, using computer and/or telecommunication or analog tools for another person or company outside the country. They enter and stay in the country as non-residents.
The number of digital nomads is growing and demand is increasing, This is why, Costa Rica has adapted since 2022. The central america country offers now a digital nomad visa. The advantage for the country is that it attracts remote workers from all over the world, who will participate in the country’s economic activity.
What are the benefits?
The advantages for the online worker are numerous, as the visa is granted for one year instaed of 180 days with a touristic one. Moreover, it’s renewable for a further year. A minimum stay of 180 days in the country is required for renewal.
Otherwise, you can come alone or with your family, who will benefit from the same facilities.
In addition, international entrepreneurs can easily import their work equipment. Basic personal computers or any other equipment needed to provide remote services are exempt from import duties.
Opening a bank account in a local establishment and driving with your foreign license are authorized.
Finally, digital nomads are not considered Costa Rican tax residents, and a 100% exemption from utility and income taxes is granted.
Of course, all this applies only during the period when applicants have a valid digital nomad status, from approval until expiry.
How to apply?
The digital nomad visa is applied for online. Immigration authorities process applications online, and provide a response within 2 weeks.
On the hand, you must prove that you provide remunerated services online or remotely. A minimum income of 3,000 USD is required for the main applicant (4,000 USD for family groups).
On the other hand, people are required to have a medical insurance policy covering the applicant and family members (if applicable) for the duration of the stay.
All documents issued in a foreign language must be accompanied by an official translation in Spanish.
